Build Your Network, Build Your Pipeline
Why did we develop the "Action Plan" for Building Industry/Education Partnerships
Crane, rigging and specialized transportation companies rely on people with technical skills. They face a shortage of qualified workers in epidemic proportions. According to December 2019 data from the Associated General Contractors, 81% of general contractors have a hard time filling positions, and their top three concerns are directly related to Labor Skill Level and Availability.
In addition to a skills gap, there is also an education gap. According to May 2020 survey results conducted by Harbor Freight Tools for Schools, only about 8% of high school students are taking a skilled trades course. Students enrolled in two or more courses, which indicates strong interest in this career path, would fill less than 10% of job openings for 2018 to 2028.
However, students, parents and voters believe skilled trades education is important.
Meanwhile, Career and Technical Education administrators say partnerships with business/industry is “important” or “very important.” But 67% of those administrators surveyed in 2019 by the Association for Career and Technical Education, say they lack the time to develop partners and one-third of them lack the funding.
"Work-Based Learning" is Education’s equivalent to Industry’s "On-the-Job Training". According to ACTE, “The strongest programs—those that deliver the most qualified talent—incorporate Work Based Learning.”
Companies will succeed if they understand that "Work Based Learning" does not only mean traditional apprenticeship. Any exposure to real world problems and environments is viewed as supporting the Work Based Learning model.
The Top 3 ways business/industry partners can get involved:
- Visit a classroom in-person or virtually
- Provide project-based activities or job shadowing experiences (for teachers, as well as students)
- Offer internships or apprenticeships
This guide is provided to SC&RA member companies as tool to help you create an action plan to establish industry-education partnerships in order to influence your local talent pipeline.
